SARAWAK ELECTIONS: PKR To Challenge EC Decision On Senadin Seat

MalaysiaKini - Pakatan Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is planning to file an election petition to challenge the result for the Senadin seat in yesterday's state polls.

Its candidate Michael Teo Yu Keng (pic) lost by a razor thin margin of 58 votes against Lee Kim Shin of BN.

PKR vice-president Tian Chua expressed his displeasure over the refusal of the Returning Officer (RO) Chai Ko Het for a recount of votes at the tallying centre in Miri last night.

"We are not happy, he (Chai) has not given us a valid reason on why he refused," he told reporters.

BN's Datuk Lee Kim Shin secured a total of 7,334 votes to defeat Teo who managed to garner 7,276 votes.

Unhappy with the result, PKR supporters as well as Selangor exco member Elizabeth Wong refused to leave the stadium used as the tallying centre three hours after the result was announced, demanding Chai hold a recount.

Dr Teo of PKR Senadin Lost By Smallest of Margin-58 votes, Plan Protest.

One of the hopeful seat for PKR is the Miri seat of Senadin-but the PKR candidate Dr Teo lost by a mere 58 votes due to postal votes -which amount to 1134, where Dr Teo only get 54 votes. He said he plan to protest. The margin would be the among the smallest margin in Sarawak’s election -beating the 94 vote margin of 2006 election

Political tsunami on April 16 possible, predicts Senadin PKR candidate

UNITED FRONT: Dr Teo, flanked by Nurul Izzah (fourth right, front row) and Tian Chua, pledges to do his best to unseat Senadin imcumbent Lee.

MIRI: PKR candidate for Senadin, Dr Michael Teo Yu Keng, believes that the April 16 polls will be a political tsunami similar in scale to the one which engulfed the nation in 2008.
The 63-year-old gynaecologist, who is in a straight-fight against incumbent Datuk Lee Kim Shin (BN-SUPP), said the party’s de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was also optimistic of a good showing in this election.
“I want to win and am confident that there would be political tsunami. Anwar has informed us that there is good response from the people (towards PKR) at the rural areas throughout the state,” he told reporters after the official announcement of the candidates at the Miri Indoor Stadium yesterday.

Dr Teo said PKR’s strategy now was to convince the voters that they could do a better job in governing the state than the BN. Penang (which is under the DAP) and Selangor (under PKR) would be used extensively as examples to prove their
contention.
He added that he would also be talking about NCR land, 20 per cent oil royalty, better roads, money for Chinese schools, granting of recognition for the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), build a new port by the sea, and introduce transparent government tender processes.

Among those present were PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar,
who is also Lembah Pantai MP, and Tian Chua, another PKR vice president Tian Chua, who is also Batu MP.
Dr Teo has been involved in election twice before but lost both times. In the 2006 state election, he also challenged Lee.
Then in 2008, he contested in Sibuti against Ahmad Lai Bujang from PBB.

Dr Michael Teo gets first endorsement from MoCS

MIRI – Dr Michael Teo Yu Keng, a gynaecologist in private practice here, has become the first Pakatan candidate to be endorsed by the Movement For Change, Sarawak (MoCS).

“A MoCS endorsement means a public declaration that Teo is a candidate of quality and substance and that he is worthy to seek elective office and deserves the support of the people,” Siah told a press conference here today.
“It also means that the endorsed candidate will receive ground support from MoCS and its affiliated NGO’s during the election campaign,” he said.
Siah said that MoCS would strongly recommend to the leadership of the party Teo belongs to that the endorsed candidate should be selected to contest as a candidate in the coming state election.
Teo, 62, is Miri PKR chairman. He had previously contested twice in a semi-rural seat in Miri but was not successful.
Before the MoCS endorsement, Siah revealed that Teo was put under the radar screen of the movement’s vetting committee. He ‘passed’ the MoCS scrutiny with flying colours, said Siah.
The MoCS leader said that the movement would only endorse credible and quality candidates either from Pakatan Rakyat or Barisan Nasional.
“We will tell the voters in Sarawak to reject unfit candidates,” Siah said, adding that MoCS currently has a list of 16 names of potential or serving candidates which it will endorse and reveal in due course.
Among the MoCS criteria of a quality candidate are that the candidate should have a vision and ready with plans for his constituency and the state as a whole; ability to serve with innovation and determination; have a positive and constructive relationship with colleagues sharing a same political mission and vision (not a quarrelsome lone ranger); have a high consciousness of ethical responsibilities and be transparent, committed and faithful to his/her publicly declared political platform; possess high moral character; knowledgeable and financially sound.
“We are placing high importance on credible and quality candidates now because we have witnessed only too often how those elected later turned into ‘frogs’ selling themselves to the highest bidder.
“The people of Sarawak deserve good, credible and unselfish politicians to represent them,” Siah added.
Dr Michael Teo, who was also present at the press conference together with William Ng, Miri MoCS Coordinator, expressed his thanks to MoCS for the endorsement. He said he would do his utmost to live up to the people’s expectation should be elected to public office.
“There are so many things I want to do for the people and my home state but I’m powerless to do so now. I need the mandate of the people to fulfill their dreams and aspirations,” Teo said.
